Picture Exchange Communication (PECS) to be beneficial for a child with delayed speech?

I only found information Austism is used on, but I was told that my son has no signs of autism – has just turned 2 and started to talk. We were evaluated and CEP has been suggested as a good way to foster communication. He is currently dragging pointer. Anyone have experience with this system?
